A Tangled Web: Lessons Learned  by Kenton Kilgore
I’m mostly pleased with how the battle went. My strategy to forgo the webway portal and come out shooting, targeting Pat’s tanks, paid off, but it would have been better for me if the Reavers and Squad 5 (who are geared to hunt tanks) had been able to do anything, and if I could have used the blasters in my other Warrior Squads earlier and more often. I did a poor job moving onto the board, which kept the Warp Beasts out of the fight until Turn 4—you know something’s wrong when the super-speedy Beasts don’t get any action until halfway through the game, while the slow-pokey Taloses are stuck in on Turn 2.

My difficult terrain checks were really bad, and my Fleet of Foot rolls were not much better, also slowing down my infantry. On the plus side, I was able to minimize the amount of gunfire that the Wyches sucked down (except for the ill-fated Ring of Honor squad). My MVPs (Most Valuable Players) for this game were the Taloses, who got in the fight quickly and munched through magicked-up squads of Sisters before most of them got worn down by enemy fire (and the aforementioned botched terrain rolls, which inflicted a total of four Wounds among the four Taloses).

After Pat’s third turn, when he smoked two Taloses, I was worried that my “Callous Drowboys” were running out of steam and would soon be beaten down: Dark Eldar can dish out a mean punch, but can’t take one. Fortunately, my guys hit hard enough in Turns 4 and 5 to convince Pat that he wasn’t going to win this game, and Dr’zzlah and Vulnayvya come back with their prize.

In future battles, I might try again to forego the webway portal; using the portal is a thoroughly nasty (and nigh-unbeatable) tactic when done correctly, and I have a bad feeling that when Codex: Death Twinkies is re-done, use of the portal will be restricted or even eliminated. Before that happens, I want to have plenty of practice in playing without using the portal gimmick.

Over to Pat….

Dennis Green, the former coach of the Arizona Cardinals football team, once got exasperated during a press conference after a game in which his team had blown a lead to the Chicago Bears, and told the reporters the Bears were “who we thought they were.” In other words, no one should be surprised that the Bears were able to come back and win. In this game, the Ozone Scorpions certainly were who I thought they were, though they may not have used the tactic I was expecting.

When setting up, I thought to deploy around the objective and use my short range fire power to rebuff the Dark Eldar advance. Even though two units ended up near Kenton’s deployment zone, I thought that with Faith points and a little luck I could hold out ‘til reinforcements arrived. This was pure folly.

In retrospect, I should have kept all the units, other than the Retributors, back in reserve. I had maneuverability enough to get to the objective in a couple of turns and coming on from reserve would have limited the damage my troops took from being on the board at the start.

The Sisters did make a pretty good go for awhile, but against Kenton’s amassed Dark Eldar, it was only a matter of time. Kudos to him for a brilliant strategy in separating the units from the Raiders. There was just too much to kill and not enough turns in which to kill it. Perhaps later in the story line, the Sisters will take their revenge on Dr’zzlah, but that is a story for another time.
