The Tiger Roars

The Jungle Top Ten: Assault Units by Patrick Eibel
Anyone who has been playing 40K for awhile knows that the Assault Phase is not what it once was.  Assault units used to be able to dominate a game through Sweeping Advances and running squads down.  Many units that were close-combat monsters in previous editions do not even show up on this list (I'm looking at you, Howling Banshees).

To keep things simple, I am not including characters on Monstrous Creatures in this, my Top Ten assault units:

10. Tyranid Hormagaunts.  By themselves, they are not great, but take enough of them, give them toxin sacs, and put them within range of Synapse Creatures, and you start to get some traction.

Your mileage may vary

9.  Khorne Berzerkers.  Oh sure, they are quite impressive on paper, but they are overpriced and no good delivery system to get them into combat.

8.  Eldar Striking Scorpions.  "Hey, we Infiltrate and our swords give us Strength 4!  What?  Oh, don't look at our Toughness 3, please."

7.  Bloodletters.  Standing around for a turn after being summoned is not good, even with a Hellblade.

6.  Daemonettes.  Better than Bloodletters because they Rend and are darn cool-looking models.

Pat's always been a sucker for a pretty face

5.  Chaos Spawn.  Only placed this high if you take 3 or 4 of them and give them Mark of Nurgle.

4.  Dark Eldar Incubi.  AP 2 weapons help against power-armored guys.  Glass jaw (T3) and tissue-paper vehicles do not.  Team them with a Haemonculus with a webway portal for increased Power From Pain, and drop in behind your opponent's rear units for additional gits and shiggles.

"We're not actually Raveners.  We're much better."

3.  Necron Wraiths.  The new codex gives them T5 and takes away none of what made them good before.

2. Ork Burna Boyz.  Give Ork Boyz a flamer that can also be a power weapon, and access to Trukks.  The best units hands-down for dishing out Overwatch hurt.

Boo to the yah!

1.  Ork Boyz.  Individually may not be all that exciting, but try handling 80 to 100 of them, especially in a detachment or formation that lets them do Hammer of Wrath as they charge.
