The White Werewolves
If you’ve
played 40K for a while, you can’t help but think of World Eaters when you
think of Khorne. But while the World Eaters are the best well-known servants
of Khorne, they are not the only ones. Other are out there, and they have
their own way of serving the Blood God….
Background
The White Wolves were a small but
redoubtable Space Wolf warband who nevertheless foreswore their oaths to
the Emperor near the end of the Horus Heresy. In the confusion and tumult
of the times, it was easy for the White Wolves to slip away from the rest
of their chapter and follow the Traitor Legions into the Eye of Terror.
The White Werewolves, as they now
call themselves, are stealthy marauders who haunt the outer territories
of the Imperium, stealing riches for themselves and slaying innocents in
the name of Khorne.
If applicable, each unit in a White
Werewolves army (except for “New Recruit” units described below) must have
one of the following Veteran Abilities (see page 19 of Codex: Chaos
Space Marines):
-
Counter-Attack
-
Move Through Cover
-
Night Vision
Philosophy
The White Wolves quietly defected
from their Chapter, and it was many years before Fenrisian forces realized
that their “missing” warband had actually turned traitor. The Werewolves
have made subtlety their modus operandi and prefer surprise attacks on
civilians or lightly-armed foes: many battles fought on the tabletop may
be assumed to be conflicts the Werewolves were unable or unwilling to avoid.
The Werewolves are a small force
and though they do not fear their former brethren, the Space Wolves, they
would prefer to keep their existence secret from them to avoid harassment
and to strike at them unexpectedly.
HQ
As Codex: Chaos Space Marines,
except that Chaos Sorcerer Lords or Chaos Sorcerers may not be used (of
course) and all characters must take the Mark of Khorne.
Elites
Only Chosen and Possessed Chaos
Space Marines may be taken. These units, and any Aspiring Champions in
them, must take the Mark of Khorne.
Troops
The Werewolves prefer to field large
forces on foot rather than using smaller forces in transports. Units of
Berzerkers and Bloodletters may be taken, but always at maximum size (20
and 15, respectively).
A White Werewolves army must include
at least one unit of Chaos Space Marines (of 5-20 members) that has NOT
taken the Mark of Khorne (or any other Mark) and thus is not a Berzerker
unit. This unit represents a squad of “new recruits” that has yet
to swear their final oaths to Khorne and take his Mark. “New Recruits”
taken as Troops are permitted to wield special weapons as per page 28 of
Codex:
Chaos Space Marines, and act as fire support for the full-fledged
Werewolves. Being “newbies,” they may not take any Veteran Abilities.
Fast Attack
Bikers may be used, and must be
given the Mark of Khorne. At least one unit of 10 Flesh Hounds must be
taken in the army. As the Werewolves were originally Space Wolves, they
distrust jump pack technology and will not employ Raptors.
Heavy Support
As per Codex: Chaos Space
Marines. Up to one unit of Havocs may be taken, but
they are not permitted to bear the Mark of Khorne. They, too, are “new
recruits,” and soon after they are deemed worthy by the leader of the army,
they will give up their heavy weapons and become Berzerkers.
Painting and Modeling
The Werewolves prefer white armor
with silver adornments. Unlike other devotees of the Blood God, the Werewolves
restrict themselves to a single Khorne emblem on their shoulder plate.
The Werewolves are adept at fighting in snow and ice, so bases should be
modeled appropriately.
General Tactics
The White Werewolves typically use
cover to advance their Berzerkers across the battlefield, attempting to
overload an opponent’s weak side with a sudden rush into hand-to-hand combat.
“New recruits,” Dreadnoughts, Defilers, and tanks will provide fire support.
