Jungle Juice: The Night's Watch by Patrick Eibel
Welcome to another edition of Jungle Juice, and the first one for 6th Edition.  Inspiration for an army idea can come from anywhere, but sometimes it can be difficult to translate an idea into an actual army.  Recently we received the following:

A friend of mine requests an army design based on the badass creed of the Nights Watch from the Game of Thrones:

"Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come."

If you can spare some time to think how this group guarding The Wall would translate into a Space Marine Chapter, I'd love to see the results...

Pavel Kasperek

The Games of Thrones series seems like it would be a great source of inspiration, even though it is a fantasy setting.  The Night’s Watch are the intrepid men who guard the great wall that keeps all sorts of wild beasties out.  It is a great honor to serve and highly dangerous.  You can tell by the creed that it is a lonely life.  The stalwart warriors of the watch are supported by local tradesmen and villagers to provide whatever support they can.

Getting Started
One of the easiest ways to create character for your army is to limit your selections from your source codex.  For this army, I will be placing some serious limitations on army selection to really develop the flavor of the army.  If you want to create this army for yourself, you can pick and choose what you want to use.

To start, the idea of a select group of elite warriors defending against all odds just screams Grey Knights to me.  I want to make each Knight in the army as “badass” as possible, so I am going to use Lord Kaldor Draigo (under a different name) to get Paladins as Troops.  If you do not want to use special characters on general principle, you can use a generic Grand Master or Brother-Captain and regular Terminator Squads as Troops.

The Army List

  • HQ:  Lord Jeor Mormont (counts as Kaldor Drago); Grey Knight Brother-Captain
  • Elites and Troops:  Paladin Squads.  I am using Paladin Squads exclusively because they are uber-Elite with two Wounds
  • Heavy Support:  Dreadnought
  • Allies:  The Night’s Watch frequently makes use of Imperial Guard Allies.
  • Fortifications:  The Night’s Watch are always tasked to defend critical locations.  When selecting the army you must take either an Imperial Bastion (75) or Fortress of Redemption (220 points.)  Now, I realize the Fortress is an expensive proposition, so feel free to use an appropriate-sized structure that looks suitably fortified.

While the list may seem restrictive, it is meant to convey the idea of a small elite force tasked to defend against impossible odds.

Modeling and Painting
Modeling this army is pretty straightforward, though you can make the weapon selections to your tastes.  I would favor swords for the Terminators (looks more Game-of-Thrones-ey) and probably go with dual twin-autocannons or lascannon/missile launcher for the Dreadnought for some anti-tank (though that would be a role filled by the Guard Allies.)  The Fortification should be decorated to look like a part of the army since it is an integral part of why the army is there.

My suggestion for color scheme would be:

  • Terminators – black armor, gray robes
  • Dreadnought – black with gray iconography
  • Imperial Guard – gray or light brown uniforms with black accents
  • Fortification – gray

Conclusion
I am not too sure how effective this army will be, but it really makes use of some of the bells and whistles of 6ht Edition and I think it would be very cool to build and play.  I hope Pavel (or his friend) like the idea and maybe one day there will be pictures of this force on the Jungle’s Facebook page.
