Jungle Juice

Jungle Juice: January  2011   by Patrick Eibel
It has been a very long while—over a year—since the  last Jungle Juice article (I have an infant son that takes up a lot of my time), but recently I got a Facebook message that I thought would a good article. The message was from Jungle Facebook Friend (JFF ™) D. Marc Burnsteel, who had the following:

Challenge for you Patrick: Cheapest ($), tactically viable (in your opinion) 1500 Space Wolf list using nothing but plastic kits. After over a decade of reading the Jungle, I've finally committed. Space Wolves it shall be. Bought the codex today.
Now, here was an interesting challenge – how to build an effective Space Wolf fighting force without any metal figures?  No Logan Grimnar. No psykers. No Wolf Priests. Clearly, I had my work cut out for me.

I knew that the starting point had to be the reasonably priced Space Wolf Battleforce.  The force comes with enough parts for two Grey Hunter squads, a Scout squad, and a Drop Pod.  I decided to run with the forces in the box and create a Drop Pod-heavy army that would be able to unload potent firepower and assault.

After much tinkering, I came up with a list. I used GW prices, but you can save money by using The Warstore or some other discount site.

The Space Wolf Battleforce comes with everything you see here. Ok, maybe not the bone-thingy terrain pieces

What to Buy

  • 1 Space Wolf Battleforce
  • 1 box Space Wolf Terminators
  • 1 box Space Marine assault scouts
  • 1 box Space Marine Tactical squad
  • 3 Land Speeders
  • 3 Drop Pods
Total cost (as of late 2010): $388.75 + tax

The Army List
Here's what I came up with.

  • Wolf Guard Battle Leader with Terminator armor, chain fist, storm shield, wolftooth necklace, Saga of the Beastslayer (170 pts)
  • 10 Scouts w/ meltabombs and assault weapons; 1 w/ Mark of the Wulfen (215 pts)
  • 4 Wolf Guard Terminators: 2 with wolf claws, 2 with thunder hammer/storm shield, plus Drop Pod (257 pts)
  • 1 Wolf Guard in power armor with thunder hammer and storm shield (48 pts)
  • 1 Wolf Guard in power armor with power weapon, bolt pistol (28 pts)
  • 9 Grey Hunters: 1 with flamer, 1 with power fist, plus Drop Pod (195 pts)
  • 9 Grey Hunters: 1 with meltagun, 1 with Mark of the Wulfen, plus Drop Pod (190 pts)
  • 10 Grey Hunters: 2 with plasma guns, 1 with power weapon, plus Drop Pod (195 pts)
  • 3 Land Speeders with multi-melta and heavy flamer (70 pts each)
Assembling the Army
All of the power armor guys (including the two Wolf Guard attached to the Grey Hunter squads) can be assembled using the Battleforce and Tactical Marine boxes. The main thing you get from the Tac box is the flamer and meltagun. Everything else should be straightforward, just be sure to assemble your figures WYSIWYG.  You can, of course, use all of the spare wolfy bits from the Battleforce to dress up your generic marines and scouts.

Using the Army
This is an alpha-strike army. You don't deploy anything at the start. Two Drop Pods come in on Turn One (I suggest the Termies, who are survivable, and the meltagun unit, to crack tanks). The Speeders Deep Strike to where they are needed. The Scouts come in hopefully from any edge that is advantageous and try to take out vehicles or troops lurking in the back.

This is by no means the only list possible, but I think it has strong potential. I toyed around with a configuration where you bought two Battleforces (dropping the Tac box and Scout box and replacing the Termies with power armor Wolf Guard), but I thought the Termies were going to provide some much needed durability.
