Iron Halo Tournament
On
November 12, 2005, Dream Wizards
in Rockville, Maryland is hosting the Iron Halo Tournament. The last tourney
I entered was at Dream Wizards, back in January of 2004, and my Dark
Eldar got slapped around like
errant school children. Since then, I’ve improved my play with the Death
Twinkies, treating them like an Ulthwe Strike Force with even nastier options.
I’m raring to bring back the new-and-improved Kabal of the Ozone Scorpions
for some cruel revenge.
A lot of DE
players like to go for the Shooty-Army-From-Hell approach: heaps of Warriors
armed with dark lances and some Wyches and/or Incubi as counterattack elements.
I eschew that strategy in favor of spearheading my attack with Wyches and
Taloses and using Warriors and Raider Squads to mop up or grab objectives.
I deploy almost all of my army through a webway portal, which protects
my vulnerable units from shooting (you can’t hit what isn’t there!) and
lets my close-combat units get up right in the enemy’s face.

Righting Past Wrongs
In the previous
tournament, I received high marks for Appearance (16 out of 18 possible)
but got dinged for Sportsmanship (19 out of 24) and Battle Points (21 out
of 54) for wins, losses, and draws. My revised strategy and beefed-up army
list should dramatically improve my winning percentage; given the success
I’ve had with the Death Twinkies at Fall From Grace
V and Counter Offensive 2, it’s
hard for me to imagine that I’ll do worse in this tournament than I did
in the last one (two losses and one tie).
Doing better
would tend to prevent any surliness on my part, which was, I fear, a factor
in my previous Sportsmanship score, which was lower than I tend to average.
The army I’m bringing is different from your standard Dark Eldar list in
that it conspicuously does NOT feature the nigh-obligatory Archon-with-Shadow-Field-and-Combat-Drugs-and-Agonizer,
nor the terminally tedious Sniper-Squad-with-Two-Dark-Lances. Hopefully,
this will score me some more Sportsmanship points. Then again, the army
does have lots of “cookie-cutter” units, identical to each other, so we’ll
just have to see, won’t we?
Note for the Fluff-Monkeys
Hardcore Jungle
fanboys might note that two characters mentioned in the list above have
changed significantly since their premieres on this site. Dr’zzllah, who
once served as Dracon for the Ozone Scorpions (and who made appearance
in Women’s Work) has been demoted
to leader of the Handmaidens, her accompanying Wych Squad. Eklavdrah, a
Raider Squad Sybarite who appeared in the series From
Idea to Reality, the story The Gray Tiger,
and the campaign Tooth and Claw, has
been promoted to a Succubus in charge of a new Wych Squad I recently formed.
It’s all part of some revamping of the army that I’ve been doing lately
to make it more interesting and more competitive. More
about that later….

Dr'zzllah (left),
once a Dracon, is now a Succubus. Eklavdrah (right) has risen
from the rank of Sybarite
Tune In Next Time….
