Countdown to Counter Offensive 2: Witch Hunters  by Ken Lacy
Ken LacyI've been interested in putting together this army for many years now, since 1999 to be exact. I finally got together the models in the past year or so, and Counter Offensive provides me with an excellent opportunity to field them, at last, complete with soundtrack and appropriate sound-clips, of course, for actual table-top play. Warning: this is definitely a PG-13 (and wholly non-PC) army.

“Inquisitor Powers and the Swinging Sisters”: 1999 points
The army is "led", so to speak, by an Interstellar Man of Mystery, the (in)famous Inquisitor Powers. He is, of course, appropriately 'elite'.

  • Inquisitor Powers (Elite). Inquisitor w/ Liber Heresius, Excruciators, bolt pistol, and close-combat weapon (47 points)
Inquisitor Powers relies on his extraordinary martial arts abilities, his crack-shot ability with a pistol, and his keen intellect to make his way 'round the field of battle. That, and the fact that he's an Independent Character and the opponent will be overwhelmed by a multitude of other targets, will keep him safe. I hope.

Of course, despite what the Inquisitor believes, the army actually relies on the strong leadership of its two female leads, the extraordinarily capable and lethal combination of Ms. Kensington and Ms. Shagwell. As you can see, Ms. Kensington is the more capable of the two, but they are both extremely proficient leaders.

  • Ms. Vanessa Kensington (HQ). Canoness w/ Cloak of St. Aspira, Blessed Weapon, bolt pistol, Book of St. Lucius, Litanies of Faith, Mantle of Ophelia (141 points)
  • Ms. Felicity Shagwell (HQ). Canoness w/ Brazier of Holy Fire, bolt pistol, Book of St. Lucius, Litanies of Faith (86 points)
The two ladies head up the Swinging Order of Sisters, notorious for their incredible Grooviness and veneration of the Emperor as an incredibly shagadelic cat and (naturally) Man of Mystery. The field force of the Order is comprised of both infantry and mechanized forces, starting with:
  • Cosmic Sisters (Heavy Support). Ten Retributors w/ four 4 heavy bolters, Veteran Sister upgrade (184 points)
  • Flower Sisters (Heavy Support). Ten Retributors w/ four 4 heavy bolters, Veteran Sister upgrade (184 points)
These two units provide ranged fire-support for the remainder of the army. The two Veteran Sister upgrades mean that they become "Faithful" units.
  • Mellow Sisters (Troops). Nine Sisters w/ heavy flamer, flamer, Veteran Sister upgrade, Book of St. Lucius, Brazier of Holy Fire (146 pts)
  • The Yellow Machine (Transport). Rhino w/ extra armor, smoke launchers, and searchlight (59 points)
  • Starshine Sisters (Troops). Nine Sisters w/ heavy flamer, flamer, Veteran Sister upgrade, Book of St. Lucius, Brazier of Holy Fire (146 pts)
  • The Earth Machine (Transport). Rhino w/ extra armor, smoke launchers, and searchlight (59 points)
These two units are the “core” of the army, providing some of the bulk, as well as a lot of the close-ranged firepower. Each unit can lay down three templates worth of flaming goodness, and also act as impromptu retinues for both Ms. Kensington and Ms. Shagwell (which is why there are only nine sisters in each unit). Both units are "Faithful."
  • Karma Sisters (Fast Attack). Six Dominions w/ four melta guns, Veteran Sister upgrade, Book of St. Lucius, combi-melta (160 points)
  • The Dharma Machine (Transport). Immolator w/ extra armor, smoke launchers, and searchlight (74 points)
  • Sisters of Aquarius (Elite). Six Celestians w/ two melta guns, Veteran Sister upgrade, Book of St. Lucius, combi-melta (128 points)
  • The Dawn Machine (Transport). Immolator w/ extra armor, smoke launchers, and searchlight (74 points)
The next two units are the "heavy hitters" of the list, packing lots of melta guns and crammed into some fearsome Immolators. The Immolators can put a serious hurt on infantry units, while the Dominion and Celestian units inside can leap out and put a hurt on vehicles. The veterans in each unit carry combi-meltas for even more anti-vehicular action. Both units are, of course, "Faithful".
  • Psychedelic Sisters (Fast Attack). Eight Seraphim w/ two inferno pistols, Veteran Sister upgrade, Book of St. Lucius, Eviscerator, Purity Seals (251 pts)
The last infantry unit is the priciest in the list, but also has the potentially to be one of the hardest-hitting. A Veteran with an Eviscerator lurks in their midst, and with their mobility, the Seraphim can support any of the other units in the army at short notice.
  • The Day-glo Machine (Heavy Support). Exorcist w/ extra armor (140 pts)
Adding a bit of extra "umph" to the Heavy Support choices is an Exorcist, for some heavy-hitting long-range firepower.
  • The Mod-bot (Elite). Callidus Assassin (120 points)
And rounding out the cast is the ultra-stylish, ultra-deadly Mod-bot. Nothing so tacky as a Fem-bot, of course, and besides, no self-respecting Interstellar Man of Mystery would be caught dead with one of those. Er…that is to say…

In all, the army comes to 1999 points, and consists of 62 infantry models, 5 vehicles, and 11 points of sheer, unadulterated Mojo (also known as "Faith" points to some). Seven of the units and two of the characters are designated Shagadelic (and thus capable of accessing, and generating, Mojo), and even if Inquisitor Powers is temporarily incapacitated, the ability of pool of Mojo is unaffected. Now that's some powerful stuff.

(How did this army do at Counter Offensive 2? Find out here and here)
