6: Introduction
August in Maryland is like walking
into the mouth of a very large dog: hot, wet, sticky, and gross. But August
in Maryland also means it’s time for Counter Offensive, held at
Dream
Wizards in Rockville. Like last year,
I’m bringing along my older daughter, Beth, for two days of pick-up gaming.
You’ll see that we’ve kept each of the army lists to about 1500 points,
so that we can play lots of smaller games over the two days of CO6. Here’s
what we’re bringing to this year’s dust-em-up.
Fighting Tigers
of Veda (1500 points)
I have several other armies, but
the Stripeypants are my oldest and
largest collection, and though I currently favor my Dvergar
and Kurindans, people like to see and
play against the Tigers. Still smarting from my struggles against Pat in
the CO6 Warm-up battle we played
recently, I’ve substantially overhauled the list, and hopefully, it will
do better this time.

Gone from the previous version of
the list are Raja Khandar Madu
(“The Redhead”), the White Tiger
Land Raider, the Techmarine (who did nothing in the prior game)
and the Whirlwind. The previous list tried to do a bunch of things at once
and didn’t succeed in much of anything; this one gets up in your face tout
de suite. The points I saved by shelving more expensive models have
gone to putting more boots on the ground: a total of 5 scoring units and
61 Marines. It lacks the range and anti-tank punch of the previous list,
but hopefully I can quickly get into a mass melee, where those factors
aren’t so important.

Speaking of Marines, Beth started
collecting
them last year, and we’re ready to field a fully-painted force
that accounts for about 2/3rds of her entire army.

Beth loves missile launchers and Tornadoes,
so we brought plenty of those. To beef up her anti-tank capability, we’ve
included a proxied Predator and three lascannon-toting Razors (also proxied).
Beth’s strategy is simple: stand back and shoot, then charge in the Chappy
and the Scouts when attackers get too close.

Dvergar Steeljacks
(1502 points)
Beth isn’t the only one working
on an army: I’m building a “Space Dwarf”
force that uses the rules from Codex: Orks. As of this writing,
I’ve only had one game with them
(a resounding success), so I want to see how they perform against other
foes.

These are all the painted figures I
have, but soon I will be doubling the size of the army (at least points-wise),
adding heaps of more “Regulars.” Like any other Ork army, this one isn’t
too difficult to use: point at the enemy and charge, counting on numbers
and cover to weather incoming fire until hand-to-hand brutality commences.
I can’t wait!
Krom Steelshield (the fellow
with the red beard) and the Steeljacks will drop the hammer on anyone they
face! I hope.
