Counter Offensive 6 Warm-Up: Part 1   by Kenton Kilgore
Off we go, then!

Turn 1
With no visible targets, Pat rolled the Demolisher and the Devil Dog forward, towards my deployment zone. On my turn, Squads Rudra 1 (accompanied by Raja Khandar Madu) and 2 arrived by Drop Pod, almost right on top of Pat’s objective. My Scouts also came on the board, and stayed out of sight behind my objective, a medium-sized building on my left, directly across from Pat’s advancing tanks. The Siege Gun fired incendiary missiles, hoping to immolate the lascannon team atop the building directly across, but the shot went wide. Rudra 1 and 2 had unimpressive firing, even at rapid-fire range, but managed to gun down Pat’s Red Infantry squad on the objective.

Here come the Marines, intent on grabbing the IG's objective (those crates and barrels right in front of the Drop Pods)

Turn 2
With lots of targets acquired, the Guard went to work. Continuing his tanks’ advance, Pat maneuvered the Devil Dog and destroyed the Vedic Siege Gun with an “I-can-just-barely-see-it” shot to the side. Fire from the Exterminator and the infantry squads dropped eight members of Rudra 1 and three members of Rudra 2. The Company Command charged Rudra 2: the Marines killed two Vets and wounded the Commissar Lord, but the Guard wiped out the Marines, thanks to five power fist Wounds delivered by Herr Kommissar. Ouch!

The Company Command Squad and the Commissar Lord kick some stripey tails

On the Fighting Tigers’ turn, the third Drop Pod (carrying Rudra 3) and the Land Raider (with the Techmarine aboard) came onto the field. The Drop Pod landed near the other two to reinforce Raja Khandar Madu and the two (!) Marines left at that end of the board. Avoiding the Company Command Squad, Rudra 3 gunned down the Red Platoon Command Squad, including the attached Commissar. A Deathwind launcher from a Drop Pod fired on the Company Command, again wounding the Commissar Lord.

Marine reinforcements arrive, and the Fighting Tigers try to make the best of a suddenly really-crappy situation

Poor damage rolls meant that the Land Raider’s lascannons merely shook the Devil Dog, despite two solid hits. Raja Khandar Madu and the tattered remnants of Rudra 1 charged the Red Platoon Infantry Squad, killing three other fellows, but the Guardsmen bayoneted Rudra 1’s Sergeant before he could use his power fist, and the fight continued.

On the other side of the board, the White Tiger (a Rogue Trader-era Land Raider) struggles against Pat's
Devil Dog, because the Tigers' mascot, Spot, seems to be bringing them no luck whatsoever

Turn 3
Repositioning to go after the White Tiger, the Demolisher immobilized itself on some difficult terrain and its Demolisher cannon was out of range of the Land Raider. Lascannons from the IG team atop the building shook the White Tiger, and infantry/Exterminator shooting dropped three Marines from Rudra 3. In close combat, Khandar Madu severely whiffed on her attacks, managing to kill only one Guardsmen even though she’s the lovechild of  Red Sonja  and  Wolverine  (it says so on Wikipedia, so it must be true).

This is seemingly NOT the Redheaded Close-Combat Monster we've all come to know and love...

Feeling cornered, the crew of the White Tiger gunned the engines and rammed the Devil Dog at full speed, but despite moving 12" and having an AV of 14, the Land Raider did little more than scrape the bumper of the IG tank. Needing a “3” or higher to wreck the ‘Dog into dog poop, I rolled a “1.”

When I thought up this particular move in my head, it was supposed to have ended a little differently....

The Drop Pods and Rudra 3 opened fire again, this time killing the rest of the Company Command and forcing the Commissar Lord to fall back (curiously, Commissars are merely Stubborn, not Fearless). Regaining her form, Raja Khandar Madu killed three Guardsmen in hand-to-hand combat, but the last member of Rudra 1 fell. The Guard bricked their Morale roll and “the Redhead” carved them to bits before joining up with Rudra 3.
