Birthday Spankings--Black & Tan: Part 1   by Kenton Kilgore
As the Attacker, I had the first turn: time to see how the new army would do!

Turn 1
I moved all my markers towards Pat’s forces and I revealed the Regulars with mine guns, who maneuvered towards the rear of the lead Devilfish and fired. The hand cannons (big shootas) were in range, but the only damage they inflicted was destroying the ‘fish’s burst cannon.

Ah, [poop]: the Tau spot the Marauders (center), the Flametongues (left), and the Trowe (top)

On his turn, Pat tried to show me what the Shooting Phase should look like. Ignoring the Dvergar that had just taken potshots at them, the Tau advanced, the Fire Warriors disembarked from their rides and formed up. Succeeding in all his attempts to spot my troops, Pat unleashed a torrent of fire. Teams Toruko and Ukon’iro and drones from their Devilfish shot at the Marauders, killing two of them. Team Enshoku gunned down one Trowe and wounded another. Team Midori’iro and Commander Shas’o D’yanoi O’ren Ishi’i shot up four Flametongues, and the Hammerhead Kuzame II took out five members of Regulars Squad 2 with a submunition round: the Cave Nomes in the way saved quite a few Dvergar from an explosive death.

The Kroot lick their beaky chops at the thought of making Cave Nome soup...

All in all, not too bad for the little guys with beards: I had kept most of my guys in cover, and had weathered the Tau’s fire. In the Assault Phase, the Kroot slammed into the Cave Nomes, wiping them out without breaking a sweat or losing one of their own. The bad news for them was that Krom and Regulars Squad 2 were right behind the Nomes….

Turn 2
I made my Reserves roll and the Dvergar Crawler (normally the Trowe’s transport) came on the board, moving forward 13" along a path, intent on getting in the way of any Tau who tried to reach my end of the table. In the Movement Phase, all of my guys moved closer to the Tau, which wasn’t hard, as they were already up-close-and-personal. Warspar Krom exhorted his Steeljacks to attack (Dvergar don’t yell “Waaagh!”, but the effect is the same), and a wave of black and gold steel smashed into the Tau.

With those pesky Nomes out of the way, Krom and his lads get to work, smashing into the Kroot, who put up a good fight

The Marauders charged Team Midori’iro, killing 10 out of 12 of them, then catching the last two and hacking them down as they tried to flee. Igniting their signature weapons, the Flametongues charged both Tau leaders, wounding the senior commander twice and killing his subordinate, losing but one of their own. The ponderous Trowe waded into Team Enshoku, crushing eight of them before the rest fell back. The Tau’s ferocious allies hacked down 12 Dvergar as they charged, but Warspar Krom and the rest of Regulars Squad 2 prevailed, killing all of the Kroot.

They're not too swift, mentally or physically, but the Trowe sure can take--and give--a heck of a punch

On Pat’s turn, the survivors of Team Enshoku continued to fall back. Teams Toruko and Ukon’iro boarded their Devilfish and moved further up the field. The Hammerhead and the other two Devilfish maneuvered to bring their firepower to bear, killing a Trowe and wounding another, driving the dim-witted Space Trolls back 9". In the Assault Phase, the Flametongues, as expected, finished off Commander Shas’o D’yanoi O’ren Ishi’i, slicing open his Crisis Suit with their electro-torches.

Flametongues (Burna Boyz by another name) go after the Tau leaders

The Trowe decide that they're receiving a little too much attention from the trigger-happy Tau
