A Thousand Points
of Light: Necrons by
Patrick Eibel
Each army
list provides a variety of troops to choose from that allows a player to
customize their force. Codex: Necrons is no exception, offering
a wide range of models to choose from. However, the difference with the
Necrons is that you are rewarded for taking lots of the same troop type
by being able to make We’ll Be Back rolls. Presented here are two
possible lists: one based around a Destroyer Lord (the "Destroyer Army")
and the other around a regular Lord (the "Standard Army").

Remember, this
list--like all the others in this series--is meant for brand new players
or for players looking to start a new army. This list is not meant to be
a "killer" list for winning tournaments or trouncing people at the local
gaming shop. Rather, it is a foundation that players can build upon as
they desire.

Destroyer Army--Tactics
The Lord and all of the Destroyers
are going to form a mobile battery. By using the Resurrection Orb, the
Lord should help keep your Destroyers around even in the face of heavy
weapon fire. The Warrior squads are large to help withstand firepower.
Try not to move them if possible, so that they can continuously rapid fire
at the enemy. Remember, the most effective close combat unit you have is
the Lord, and actually, you want to keep him out of close combat if possible.

Standard Army--1000
point list
The price
given for the Necron Lord is taken from the one with the Warscythe. Currently
there is no available Lord modeled with a Staff Of Light, unless you get
the box set or get the out-of-production original (see below).
Many rumors sites have featured a very cool Necron Lord figure holding
a Staff of Light over his head, but no dates have been set for its release.
Alternatively, you could get the torso of the Destroyer Lord and use his
arms, but attach it to one of the spare Warrior legs you will have from
the box.

Some might question why I included
such an expensive item as the Monolith in such a small list. Mostly, to
be "in character": let's face it, the Monolith is just plain cool. While
it's true that the presence of the Monolith severely reduces your numbers,
the good news is that in a small battle, it has little to fear except a
lucky shot.

Standard Army--Tactics
The Scarabs will form your screening
unit and will advance to keep the enemy occupied while your other units
get into position. If possible, Deep Strike the Monolith to a defensible
position. Keep in mind that the Monolith is your best weapon versus tanks
and is your best way to move troops around the board. Fortunately, it is
a pretty hard beastie.
The Warriors and the Lord will form
a tactical unit, probably best used by “leap frogging” – advance one unit
while the other provides covering fire. The third unit can either be deployed
initially or be held in Reserve to come through the Monolith. This
will depend on the strength of numbers your opponent fields: if you are
facing a lot of guns, you may want the extra bodies on the field.
